NDSM shipyard
The former NDSM shipyards used to cover an area of 2 square km on the north banks of the waters of ‘t IJ, in Amsterdam. The company shut down in 1985 after some mergers and a bankruptcy. The early nineties saw the first squatters
taking control of the area. Now an organization, of former squatters, owns the grounds and exploits it for cultural benefits, organizing several festivals each year and a monthly vintage goods sale.
There also is a skate park, artist exhibitions, residences and much more. Of the 2 square km, only a fraction is now owned by the organization. Some of the dry docks have been bought by other dockyards some of the area that is near to the NDSM buildings have been redeveloped into a thriving creative area. Besides some small marine related companies, there are several architects who has taken residence in this area. Another company is MTV networks, who is housed in a former carpentry workshop where ships’ inners where crafted. Nearby a former crane base, on which cranes used to roll back and forth,
has been turned into a one of a kind building, called ‘Kraanspoor’ in Dutch.

Journey The Hague

Exposing the sex trade with ‘Journey’
Mensenhandel is grenzeloze misdaad.

An international art installation on human trafficking entitled ‘Journey’ can be seen on the Plein in The Hague from 14 to 24 October. The installation was co-created by the British actress and director Emma Thompson, who will be in The Hague on Thursday for the opening.
The installation tells the story of a young girl, Elena, who was forced into the global sex industry. Elena is from a small town in the East European republic of Moldova. At the age of 18, she was promised a job and a future in the UK. When she arrived, she was made into a prostitute.
Emma Thompson co-created ‘Journey’ with a woman who was victimized by sex traffickers. Viewers who look through this porthole see their own faces superimposed on the bodies of woman wearing prostitutes’; weeds, tattered lingerie and other worn, used clothing.
Seven shipping containers
The installation comprises seven shipping containers, each designed by a different artist to interpret the seven stages of Elena’s ‘journey into hell’. Visitors will experience victims’ feelings of anger, humiliation and violence but also the creativity and survival instinct which ultimately lead to their ‘liberation’.
‘Journey’ is an initiative of the Helen Bamber Foundation, a human rights charity working with survivors of gross human rights violations
Visitors information
The installation on international human trafficking will remain in The Hague until 24 October. The installation is open daily from 11.00 to 19.00 hrs. Admission is free.
